Tribute To The Somali Women Of Ogaden

E-mail Print PDF
Nestled in the heart of the Horn of Africa a woman walks across the Savannah, with her child grasping one hand and a precious water container nearly filled to the rim in the other. She scans the landscape for signs of danger taking the form of Ethiopian troops on patrol. She knows that if she encounters even a small patrol, the chances of being raped, beaten and even killed are high. Despite this realization, her children must eat and drink and so she walks, albeit cautiously, driven by the undeniable love a mother has for her child. She has suffered much; her village has been reduced to ashes. The members of her family killed by the Ethiopians are too numerous to recall. During the harshest famines, she has gone hungry to that her children may eat. Her land is rich by all measures, yet she is poor as her mother was before her.

As she walks she sees movement in the distance. She pauses, just to be certain her eyes had not seen something which is not there. Yet, to her horror, her eyes had not deceived her. A slow swarm of figures is approaching her position. They are barely noticeable. There clothes blend into the country side. She quickly glances around for brushes big enough to give her child cover. She has done this before and her child knows to remain silent until her mother removes her hardened hands placed across her tiny dry cracked lips. She sees the brush she is looking for a several meters away. She walks quickly, nearly running, dragging her child. She keeps her head low using the diverse assortment of vegetation which fills the country side as cover when she approaches the lifesaving brushes. She wishes she had drawn water from the well faster so that she had started back sooner, avoiding this place at this moment in time. She is so close where her family is settled that she considers making a run for it but that thought quickly leaves her mind as she knows there is no way she can make it in time and safe her child.

Will she once again live through this day? Will her child grow up even if only to experience the same fear when she collects firewood or fetches water with a child of her own years from now?  The mother can only pray. She rushes into the brushes, ignoring the scratches of the dry bush which has not soaked life giving rain for months. She sits still, with her child beside her. Silent, they sit fearing the worst but still hoping to come out this ordeal alive.  Even the soft sound of her breath and her rapidly beating heart seem too loud for her liking. She waits, and waits. They are close now, so close you can hear there voices although there words are unrecognizable.

Then suddenly and without warning, there is movement behind her. Someone is approaching. Could she have missed one of them?  Was she too late? Had her worst nightmare come true? She cannot bear to look. If this is indeed the end she prays it comes quickly. She moves her hand from her child’s mouth up to her ears. Even a moment before death she cannot bear to let the loud crackly of rifle shots startle her child. It is her last act of love before leaving this world.

"Walaal" a male voice says. She turns without wanting to and sees a hand stretched out, a kind smile and eyes so gentle; they could only be a blessing from Allah. Her breathing slows, she removes her hands from her child’s ears and stares at a young man wearing a green fatigue with his rifle securely balances on his shoulder. "Walaal" he says again, and this time she knows she is safe. This time she knows she stands before one of her own. She may not be so fortunate another day but today she feels she hit the lottery.  Today, they will survive, because today she stands before the only ones who have sworn to protect her. Today, she is in the presence of the defenders of her dignity, and the dignity of countless others like her. She exhales and says "Xaqle" as the young man smiles. She moves her child towards him as he separates the thick twigs to ensure the child is not hurt coming out of the brush. She emerges from her hiding place, and sees those same gentle eyes all around her.

Time is forgotten as the young men talk to her while sharing there rations. When the time comes, she says goodbye to her brothers and, to her pleasant surprise, her sisters of the Ogaden National Liberation Front (ONLF), she picks up her water container and walks the short remaining distance to her family with a smile on her face.

Tomorrow she will go out and fetch water again. She will do this despite the dangers she may encounter. She tells herself it's a matter of survival, but deep down she knows it is more than that. It is her own personal defiance against those who have brought so much misery to her land and her people. She will not be a prisoner in her own land. She will not yield to the wishes of her occupier.

That night, as her child sleeps, she softly recites a poem of defiance. The same poem her mother recited to her years ago. It is a poem recited by mothers to their children all over Ogaden. It is a poem conveying the message of struggle.

She is a Somali woman from the Ogaden and she is the custodian of our hopes and the symbol of our struggle.

ONLF SHOULD BRING ALL REBEL GROUPS TOGETHER OR SHOULD SURRENDER!!!!!!!!!
written by osman warsame, June 29, 2009
the ONLF should bring all rebel groups together and coordinated attacks against the Ethiopian forces all over ethiopia or they should surrender and the let the people be colonized, simple as that.
Now some of you are shaking your heads and saying what a coward, i am far from being a coward. this struggle has been going on for far too long and it is causing a massive humanitarian catastrophe against the poor people of the Ogaden. this struggle should be brought to a quick end through a victory or defeat.
What the ONLF needs to do to defeat the massive war machine of the Ethiopian dictator is to have a real and working relationship with all the other rebel groups throughout Ethiopia. all the groups should communicate and setup plans on how to topple the dictator. this is no easy an task but is achievable. all the rebels should coordinate attacks and get Ethiopian military fighting multiple fronts instead of just Ogadenia, roads and rail lines should be blocked and the blockades should be sustained throughout Ethiopia to cripple the economy of the country and cause civil unrest inside Ethiopia. rebels should be integrated during drought seasons to avoid desertions i.e [ if theirs drought in Ogadenia, Onlf should be able to go to oromia state and continue fighting]. rebels should form units to hunt down senior ethiopian officials, it is a good intimidation tactics [ just sending someone a bullet in an envelope will give them sleepless nights].
Now if the Onlf can't do what i mentioned above they should put down their arms and join the government, because that is how you win wars against modern military might. all the rest will just make the people suffer more unnecessary hardships.
and for goodness sakes change the name from ONLF to something else, it does not matter if you change it to goats liberation front or soil liberation front. if just changing the name will bring others to join the struggle well and good. me personally the highly educated guy i am i could careless about name. but knowing somalis and how clan politics ruins everything i think it would be a smart move to make the struggle the peoples struggle not just one clans struggle. the divide and rule policies of the british is the origins of the name of Ogadenia, and now we are still divided and ruled just because we don't want to correct ourselves.

“The ONLF should bring all rebel groups together and coordinated attacks against the Ethiopian forces all over Ethiopia or they should surrender and let the people be colonized, simple as that”.

Is it not a case of putting the cart before the horse?

Do we have to organise our people first for the legitimate struggle of liberating Ogadenia from Ethiopian colonialism, or, as the writer suggests, we should spend our precious time and resources on the far more grandiose plan of bringing Ethiopian opposition groups- armed or not armed-together under one umbrella and form a common front against the regime? We are yet to gain a foothold, let alone liberate, in many parts of our region and we are contemplating on spreading our wings elsewhere. The egg or the chicken –which comes first?

I think we should continue firmly on our path and put emphasis on our region and not waste our meagre resources on something that we might not necessarily have control over its destiny or share its vision for Ethiopia. This is not to say that we should not assist those forces that genuinely want to overthrow the regime in whatever way or form we can. As we have already done, our alliances with Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) and the other opposition alliance we are part of -the Alliance for Freedom and Democracy (AFD)- confirm our commitment to the broader front of which Osman is talking about.

Its ridiculous to suggest that we should instigate and start an insurgency in places that have no quarrel with current regime, solely on our own means, in order to distract the regime and open as many fronts as we can. Or else give up the fight for our freedom and surrender. If we find potential for this endeavor, and opportunity lies for us to take part in such adventure, then its good idea. Ours is not about regime change in Addis; its about freedom and secession. We cannot also impose our desired leadership in Ethiopia.

you missed the point nasiye..
written by osman warsame, July 01, 2009
my point is it would be much easier to overthrow this oppressive regime completely than to fight in ogadenia and thus trying to liberate it. the simple fact is meles don't care if he looses fifty thousand soldier in a single day, remember the foot soldiers are not tigreys, the officers are, they are all those black minority tribes from all over ethiopia. nasiye if we continue this same path we being using last 15 years as you suggested it will only last in a complete annihilation of our people without any gains from it. ethiopia will never run out of bullets and soldies, heck foreign powers are willing to send them arms every year.
why i am suggesting change of strategy is first we have not done any harm to the enemy and we have not liberated our people. yes, the onlf killed many poor underpaid soldier and occasionally grabbed the headlines, but that does not liberate a country and it's citizens. for the last 15 years onlf's strategies were hit and run tactics which by the way did not bear any fruits. it just irritated the dictator and caused systematic punishment of our people.
i am not suggesting to start new insurgencies in parts of ethiopia, but what i am suggesting is new way of doing things with the help of current rebel groups. i think olf fighters should be able to come to ogaden if onlf needs reinforcements and onlf should be able to go to oromia if need arises [power in numbers]. i also strongly believe that this dictatorial regime can not last a six months of complete and sustained blockade of roads and rail lines all over ethiopia, it will cripple the their economy and cause civil unrest in major towns like addis. just burn the trucks and derail the trains. all the rebel groups should have a central command and control to coordinate attacks. the regime should have fire coming at it from all directions. this will bring it to the table or it will topple it. with that said, if we continue this same tired old path 15 yrs from now thing will be the same and worse for our people. i believe overthrowing this regime is much easier than liberating Ogadenia. TPLF alone did not overthrow mengistu it was all the rebel groups including WSLF who overthrew mengistu. if the tplf would have done what the onlf is doing now mengistu would have chewed them up. they were smart and sought the help of all the oppressed groups, that is the same approach we need or meles will chew us up. lagaa bartaa lagaa badhia

Masha Allah beautifully written..That was a very moving and touching story thanks for sharing..to those who have suffered their feelings are hard to describe adequately, there is a sense of utter despair, emptiness, and a numbing of the senses..The women of Ogaden region are not alone in they struggle for justice, it is same as that of Palestinian women who face occupation daily but yet remain steadfastness and resistance in the face of all adversity and injustices.May Allah ease the hardships of our muslim brothers and sisters where ever they may reside and grand them freedom, ameeen.

In Sura Al-Baqara, verses 155-157, Allah subhanallahu ta'ala reminds us:

Be sure We shall test you with something of fear and hunger; some loss in goods or lives or the fruits (of your toil) but give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere. Who say when afflicted with calamity: "Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhir raji-oon"

HOW TO STOP OIL DRILLING IN OGADEN.....
written by osman warsame, July 06, 2009
We have seen how the shameless dictator in Ethiopia meles is commiting genocide against the poor people of the Ogaden, and at the same time he is trying to exploit their God given natural resources. what a shameless moronic, mindless, disgusting, and megalomaniac dictator.
My friends, i am writing this posting on how we can defeat the dictator on Not pulling a single barrel of oil out of Ogaden. I strongly believe that we can prevent this from happening if we become realistic in our approach to this issue and utilise our resources all over the world. We can do many things to prevent greedy oil companies from even thinking about coming to Ogaden to extract oil from the land of the subjugated masses.
what we can do is first we need organisation like the Onlf to spearhead this effort. we also need our brethrens in the diaspora to take a proactive role in this struggle.
the oil companies just want to make a dollar without any hassles, they cannot stand protests and defaming television ads that will portrait their company in a negative limelight.
say, i will use for example petronas, the malaysian company currently seeking to explore for oil and gas in Ogaden. petronas can be discourage if we utilise our large somali population in malaysia to protest in front of the company headquarters in Kuala lumpur, Malaysia to bring attention among the muslim malaysians on how their partly owned government company is wreaking havoc with the help of the dictator meles zenawi on the poor muslim people of Ogaden. We can also buy TV ads on national televisions in malaysia to highlight the inhumane nature of petronas and how it makes money without any consideration of the oppressed peoples plight. Now the ads must show the reality in the ogaden and the people of ogaden must be in them talking about their problems with the regime and the ongoing genocide committed against them by petronas. TV ads are not that expensive, for example in the US it cost about $500 per day on nationally known popular channel. I am sure it's even cheaper in Malaysia.
We can also sue petronas and the malaysian government through their court systems to halt the drilling and compensate the Ogaden people for damages caused against them by the greedy dictator with the help of petronas which is partly owned by the malaysian government. The Malaysian people need to know how their government owned company is helping fund the genocide against a fellow muslim people.
Now this are all pressure tactics that if sustained will cause Petronas to have second thoughts about oil drilling in Ogaden and eventually make it withdraw its commitment to explore for oil in Ogaden. If we can get a moral victory over Petronas, they will withdraw from Ogaden and a victory against Petronas will mean a victory against all other oil companies.
what i have mentioned cannot be done by a single individual or a single organisation, but by a collective determined men and women who are willing to put their money and effort in to ensure that not a single barrel of oil is taking out of Ogaden without the consent of the Ogaden people.
All the tactics i mentioned are not that expensive and if sustained will defeat the dictator and Petronas.
Let's keep the pressure on.
