Protest Outside the Ethiopian Embassy |
April 05,
2007 A well organized group from the
Ogaden Somali community throughout Ontario
held a protest outside the Ethiopian embassy
in Ottawa yesterday from 2:00 PM. The
protesters held signs highlighting the
continued illegal detention of a Canadian,
Mr. Bashir Makhtal, illegally sent to
Ethiopia by Kenya earlier this year.
A protester holding a sign that summed up
the aims of the protest told our reporter
that no matter how cold it gets they intend
to stand outside the Ethiopian embassy in
order to bring to the fore the plight of the
rendered Canadian Mr. Bashir Makhtal.
The protest which appeared organized
attracted the attention of the Canadian
media. Many Canadian media companies were
present and seen either interviewing the
protesters or filming the actions of the
protesters who were moving from side to side
in front of the Ethiopian embassy.
The presence of the protesters and the
hordes of media attending the protest
appeared to have caught the Ethiopian
embassy staff off guard. The Ethiopian
embassy staff was seen peering from the
front windows to get glimpse of the action
of the protesters and the media.
Among the attendees in the protest were
representatives from Mr. Lorne Waldman's
office and Amnesty International.
