25 elders from Somali Regional State have travelled to Addis Ababa. It is anticipated that they will participate in memorial services in remembrance of Hachalu Hundessa and to take on a peacemaking role by participating in efforts to de-escalate current tensions.
Hachalu Hundessa, 34-year-old artist was killed in Addis Ababa on Monday. The artist was known for his revolutionary songs relating to the oppression and political marginalisation experienced by the Oromo people.
Following the death of the artist, many cities in Ethiopia have seen massive demonstrations. At least 166 people have been killed in Oromia and Addis Ababa and more than a thousand were arrested by the authority after the death of revolutionary singer and songwriter protest in Ethiopia.
